Domestic Yaks of Everest Regions

Yaks are found mostly at the higher ranges of the Himalayan mountains. There are two types of Yaks Wild yaks, and Domesticated yaks.

While domestic yaks are found all over, wild yaks are endangered animals and now only found in remote regions of the Himalayas.

Yaks are found anywhere from 3,200 to 5,400 meters and will not thrive at lower altitudes. Generally Sherpa call the males of the species “Yak” and the females “Nak”, and also “Dri”. They have a ability to climb as high as 20,000 ft (around 6,100 m) and tend to live at high altitudes because of their thick coat and vulnerability to diseases. The lungs of yaks are usually large in order to absorb more oxygen at higher altitudes.
